Oregon Massage License

Massage therapists in Oregon must have a license issued by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists before practicing. The mission of the Board is protect public safety and to develop, implement and maintain the standards of professional conduct and practice.
To become a licensed massage therapist (LMT) in the state of Oregon, you must first complete the requirements as described on the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists website. We've provided a summary of these requirements below for a quick reference. Find out how we can help you pass the MBELx.
Industry research from ABMP in 2016 estimated that there was about 6,750 massage therapists in Oregon. That's approximately one therapist per every 600 people in the state.

Massage Education Requirements in Oregon
Applicants for an Oregon massage therapy license are required to complete a minimum of 650 hours/25 quarter credits/15.74 semester credits of massage education from an accredited or Department of Education approved school. The training program must include at a minimum:
- 200 hours/8 quarter credits/5.34 semester credits of health sciences including anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and pathology
- 300 hours/12 quarter credits/8 semester credits of massage theory and practical application, clinical practice, business development, sanitation, communication and ethics
- 125 hours/5 quarter credits/2.4 semester credits of remaining course requirements may be fulfilled with any of the above subject areas
Examination Requirements
The Oregon Board of Massage Therapists has approved the following exams:
- Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
- NCETMB/NCETM credentialing exam offered by the NCBTMB
- CESI (Certification Exam for Structural Integration)
Note: all exam results must be submitted from the exam provider.

Additional License Requirements
Getting an Oregon massage license in has additional requirements. The applicant must also:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Pass the Jurisprudence Exam
- Submit to a background check with electronic fingerprinting
- Verify current CPR certification
Application Process
To obtain an Oregon massage license, individuals must first complete an online registration and make the required payment (application fee and fingerprint processing fee). This initial payment will either be a total of $90 or $140, depending on your birth year (the fee will be calculated automatically for you). Applicants will then receive an email with login information to complete the online application. You can find current application instructions and links directly on the OBMT website.
After the online application and supporting documentation is reviewed, the applicant will receive login information to take the Jurisprudence Exam. This is followed by the background check and fungerprinting process, then payment of the licensing fee.
The Credentialing Review process is available for out of state massage therapists who have practicing legally for many years but may not meet the traditional classroom education requirements.

Below is a summary of the fees charged by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists.

- Credentialing Review: $250
- Initial license fee (if over 12 months left in cycle): $100
- Initial license fee (if under 12 months left in cycle): $50
- Active License Renewal: $155
- Inactive License Renewal: $75
- Late fee: $25 per week
- Fingerprint processing fee: $40
Renewal Process
All Oregon massage therapy licenses expire on the last day of their birth month, every other year. Licensees born on odd-numbered years will renew their license every odd year, regardless of when the initial license was issued. Individuals born on even-numbered years will renew their license every even year. The following must be done to complete your renewal application:
- Complete the online renewal
- Verify current CPR certification
- Complete 25 CEU credit hours
- Pay renewal fee of $155
